What Happens to Your Hair After You Donate?

A behind‑the‑scenes journey from ponytail → wig.

When someone donates their hair, they’re giving far more than inches — they’re giving comfort, dignity, and a piece of themselves to someone facing medical hair loss. But what actually happens after the scissors close? Where does your ponytail go? How does it become part of a real wig worn by a real person?

Here’s the journey your hair takes once it arrives at Hair We Share.

1. Your Ponytail Arrives in Our Mailroom

When your ponytail arrives, it’s opened with care by our mailroom team. This part of the process is supported by volunteers from Women’s Connection, a vibrant, member‑led nonprofit for women 50+ who come together to learn, build friendships, and volunteer in their communities. Their support helps us ensure every donation is handled with respect from the moment it reaches our door.

Each ponytail is then logged into our system and sorted into one of two categories:

  • Ponytail Tracking (sponsored) — these donations include the $150 processing contribution, so they move directly into our sorting room where the wig‑making journey begins.

  • Hair‑Only (unsponsored) — these ponytails are lovingly stored in our inventory, where they wait for sponsorship before they can move forward in the process.

Every ponytail is treated like the gift it is — a piece of someone’s generosity and hope — and we make sure it’s cared for from the very first step.

2. Sorting & Matching

A single wig requires multiple ponytails, often from different donors. To create a natural‑looking wig, we sort hair by:

  • Color

  • Texture

  • Length

This step ensures the final wig looks seamless and feels like it truly belongs to the person who will wear it.

3. Professional Processing at Our Partner Factory

Once your ponytail is sorted and ready, it is carefully shipped to our professional wig‑making factory, where the real transformation begins. This is a highly skilled, hands‑on process. The hair is cleaned, aligned, and prepared strand by strand to ensure it will be soft, durable, and comfortable for the person who will eventually wear it.

Every step is done by trained wigmakers — no mass production, no shortcuts — just meticulous craftsmanship and care.

4. Wig Construction: Building the Foundation

After processing, your ponytail moves into wig construction at our partner factory. This is where the hair is transformed into a high‑quality wig base.

Some of the hair is sewn into wefts, which are then attached to the wig cap. The most delicate areas — the top, front, and hairline — are hand‑tied strand by strand to create a natural appearance and realistic movement.

Once the wig base is complete, it is shipped back to us — another expense we cover as part of the process.

5. Back at Our Workshop: Logging & Photographing for Tracking

When the completed wig base returns to our workshop, it is carefully checked in and logged into our system. Much of this work is lovingly supported by our team of developmentally disabled volunteers, who participate in sorting, inventory, and photography as part of their life‑skills and job‑training experience with us.

For ponytails enrolled in our Ponytail Tracking Program, this is the moment we photograph the finished wig base so donors can see the transformation their sponsored ponytail helped create.

Once logged and photographed, the wig base is placed into our active inventory, where it waits to be matched with a recipient based on length, color, and texture needs.

6. Matched With Its Recipient: Where Your Gift Becomes Hope

When a wig base is ready, our team carefully matches it with someone on our waitlist whose needs align with its length, color, and texture. Every match is thoughtful and intentional — we want each person to feel seen, supported, and represented.

Once a match is made, the wig is prepared for delivery and sent to its new home at no cost to the recipient. This is the moment your donation becomes something far greater than hair. It becomes comfort. It becomes confidence. It becomes a reminder that someone out there cared enough to give a piece of themselves.

Your ponytail becomes part of someone’s story — a story of strength, dignity, and hope.

Hear from one of our wig recipients: In this short video, she talks about her experience with Hair We Share, in conversation with Suzanne Chimera, Co‑Founder of Hair We Share, and you’ll also see her wig being styled by Jo Marie, our Lead Stylist. It’s a simple, powerful reminder of what your generosity makes possible.
