Inside the Wig Bank: How We Stretch Every Donation
Lindenhurst cosmetology students and their teacher, joined by a representative from Moroccanoil, Hair We Share co‑founders Suzanne and Dean, CancerCare representatives, and Jo Marie, our lead wig stylist, celebrating the launch of the Wig Bank and the students’ work styling the wigs.
When we created the Hair We Share Wig Bank program, we had one goal in mind: make every single donation go further — and reach people right at the point of treatment.
Medical hair loss often happens suddenly. Families are overwhelmed, appointments are constant, and emotions run high. The Wig Bank ensures that support is available immediately in the very places where patients are already receiving care.
It’s efficient. It’s sustainable. And it changes lives.
Why the Wig Bank Exists
We saw a clear need: people facing medical hair loss needed access to wigs right where they were being treated, not after a long search or complicated process.
The Wig Bank was our answer — a system that places ready‑to‑customize wigs directly inside cancer centers and partner organizations, so patients can receive support the moment they need it.
It’s immediate. It’s personal. And it preserves dignity at a time when people need it most.
Efficiency: Getting Wigs to Patients Faster
Each Wig Bank begins with a shipment of 100 raw wigs — high‑quality caps filled with donated ponytails. These wigs are intentionally left unstyled so they can be customized for each individual.
This approach allows us to:
Keep wigs readily available at partner sites
Reduce back‑and‑forth communication
Serve more people with fewer delays
Ensure every wig is tailored to the recipient’s needs
When a Wig Bank’s supply gets low, we replenish it — keeping support continuous.

Sustainability: Making Every Donation Count
Sustainability is at the heart of the Wig Bank model.
By centralizing production and distributing raw wigs in bulk, we’re able to:
Reduce waste by creating versatile wigs that can be adapted to many recipients
Maximize every ponytail so no donation is ever taken for granted
Lower overall costs, allowing us to stretch financial donations further
Support more people with the same amount of resources
Local beauty school students often style the wigs for our nearby Wig Banks, and we partner with salons for adjustments and finishing touches. This shared effort keeps the program sustainable, community‑driven, and deeply personal. Many of our Wig Banks begin with community‑led hair drives and fundraisers. If your school, salon, or organization would like to get involved, you can learn more about hosting a group donation here.
Every ponytail is used with intention, and if you’d like to donate hair, you can find our guidelines here.
Partnerships: Community at the Center

A Wig Bank is more than a shipment of wigs — it’s a collaboration.
Each partner site works with a local salon or beauty school to style the wigs for their patients. These professionals donate their time and talent, turning raw wigs into finished looks that reflect each person’s identity.
This partnership model:
Builds community involvement
Reduces styling costs
Gives patients a personalized experience
Helps salons and students give back in a meaningful way
We’ve seen entire communities rally around their Wig Bank — hosting drives, raising funds, and celebrating every recipient.
Serving the Rest of the Country
While Wig Banks are powerful, we don’t yet have them in every community — but that is our long‑term goal.
For most of the country, we serve recipients through our main program by shipping wigs directly by mail. This allows us to reach families in rural areas, small towns, and regions without partner sites.
Right now, we have a handful of Wig Banks across the United States, with our strongest focus on our Long Island community, where the program began. As we continue to grow, our vision is to expand Wig Banks across the country so more people can receive support right at the point of treatment.
Every donation — every ponytail, every dollar, every partnership — brings us closer to that future.
The Wig Bank Is More Than a Program — It’s a Lifeline
Every Wig Bank represents hope, dignity, and community. It ensures that no one facing medical hair loss has to walk this journey alone.
And with your continued support — through hair donations, fundraising, partnerships, and sharing our mission — we can keep expanding this program to reach more people than ever before.
Together, we stretch every donation. Together, we change lives.
