Hair We Share & United Salons of America Media Kit

1. About Hair We Share

Founded in 2014, Hair We Share is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to restoring dignity and confidence to individuals experiencing medical hair loss. The organization provides high-quality, custom-made human hair wigs to children and adults at no cost. Hair We Share is fueled by generous hair donors and financial contributions from individuals, salons, and businesses who believe in the power of giving.

Hair We Share serves individuals facing hair loss due to medical conditions such as cancer, alopecia, and other chronic illnesses. Unlike commercial wig options, these custom wigs are styled to reflect each recipient's personality, helping restore a sense of self during a difficult time.

With over a decade of service, Hair We Share has helped thousands of individuals regain their confidence and identity. The organization’s transparency and dedication have made it a trusted resource nationwide.

Apply for a Wig

Individuals experiencing medical hair loss can apply for a free, custom-made human hair wig. Children under 18 receive wigs at no cost with proof of medical hair loss, while adults over 18 are provided wigs based on financial need and approval. Applicants must submit a doctor's prescription stating the reason for hair loss, and adults must provide proof of financial need. Applications are reviewed by the board of directors, with responses typically within five business days.

Hair Donation

Donors can contribute a minimum of 12 inches of hair, which must be clean, dry, and secured in multiple small ponytails. Hair that has been bleached is not accepted, but dyed (natural colors only), permed, straightened, and gray or white hair are acceptable. Donors can also participate in the Ponytail Tracking Program by making a $150 financial contribution, allowing them to track their hair’s journey into a wig and receive an “I Made the Cut” t-shirt and certificate.

Financial Donation

Monetary contributions are vital for covering the costs of wig production and distribution. Donors can choose to make one-time or recurring donations in various amounts. Optional payment methods include Venmo and PayPal. Financial donations help ensure that wigs can be provided at no cost to recipients.

Group Donation

Schools, salons, or community groups can organize events to collect hair donations and raise funds. Combining fundraising with hair donations helps cover the manufacturing expenses of wigs. A $150 donation per ponytail fully covers the wig production cost. Guidelines and support for planning such events are provided by Hair We Share.

2. About United Salons of America

United Salons of America (USA) is an initiative launched by Hair We Share in 2024 to activate the collective power of the beauty industry in support of medical hair loss patients. Spearheaded by Chairperson Jo Marie and Hair We Share Co-Founders Dean Riskin and Suzanne Chimera, USA aims to unite salons, stylists, and beauty professionals across the country to contribute their time, talent, and resources to this compassionate cause.

Born from a touching moment of delivering a wig to a young cancer patient, Jo Marie's involvement brought new energy and vision to Hair We Share’s mission. The annual USA fundraiser held each April mobilizes hundreds of salons to host events, raise funds, and spread awareness.

Through community activation, salon services, and brand collaboration, USA creates an inclusive network committed to making custom wigs accessible to those who need them most.

3. Mission and Vision

Hair We Share Mission:
To help maintain dignity, confidence, and self-esteem for those affected by medical hair loss by providing free, human hair wigs.

United Salons of America Vision:
To build a nationwide collective of beauty professionals and business partners working together to fund the creation of wigs for medical hair loss patients, providing hope and confidence during challenging times.

4. Programs and Initiatives

Ponytail Donation Program

Hair We Share accepts donations of hair 12 inches or longer. For a $150 contribution, donors can join the Ponytail Tracking Program, receiving a certificate, T-shirt, and updates on where their hair goes. This donation helps fund the cost of creating the wigs.

Salon Partner Program

Salons can officially partner with Hair We Share by collecting hair donations, promoting awareness, and participating in annual campaigns. Salons receive support materials and promotional assets to help them engage their clients in meaningful ways.

United Salons of America Annual Fundraiser

Each April, United Salons of America rallies salons and stylists nationwide for a month-long fundraising effort. Salons host cut-a-thons, donation drives, and local events while sharing their participation on social media and through in-store promotions.

Wig Customization & Styling Network

Many donated wigs require professional cutting, coloring, and styling to match each recipient’s needs. USA coordinates a network of volunteer salon professionals who donate their services to ensure wigs are indistinguishable from natural hair.
