We are so grateful for all the ponytails we are receiving! We have been bombarded with questions from people wanting to donate their hair. With a small staff, it has been difficult to keep responding to individual questions.
This weeks blog, I put together some FAQ’s on donating your hair to be made into a wig.
How do I send my hair to you?
Hair must be clean, dry and secured with rubber bands at the top. We suggest cutting many small ponytails rather than one big one (it gives us the most usable hair). Place the hair in a zip- loc bag and then in a padded envelope and ship to:

Why do you ask me to set up a fundraiser? Isn’t my hair donation enough?
The ponytail donation greatly reduces the cost of making a wig, but the biggest expense is the labor. It takes about 6 weeks to make one wig, we literally count hairs!
How much does it cost me to start a fundraiser?
Nothing but a few minutes of your time!
How do I start a fundraiser?
Its very simple, we use a service called Root Funding, it takes a few minutes to set up and share with your social network.
What should my goal amount be to sponsor my hair being made into a wig?
We suggest $250.00 to help with the portion of the wig your hair will be put into, any additional will help us to reach further goals.
I want to donate my hair but don’t want to cut it short. What is the minimum length?
We ask for 10″ minimum. The reason is, we end up with less. First we trim away any split ends. We usually lose 2-3 inches. To sew the hair in the wig, it needs to be folded. In the bottom portion of the wig we can fold and only lose about 2-3″, but in the top portion we have to fold the hair in half to sew it, so that there are no unsightly short hairs. Because of this a 10 inch ponytail donation only ends up being 4 to 8 inches for a completed wig.
I dye my hair is it OK?
Yes, as long is it is not bleached.
I highlight my hair but keep it healthy is it OK?
No! Even though you take good care of your hair and it is healthy, it is not as strong as hair that has not been lightened. Because we sew the hair, it puts a lot of stress on it therefore it cannot last long in a wig, it will begin to break.
I have gray hair is it OK?
Will you sell my hair?
NO, we are a not for profit. The wig we make from your hair will be given to a person who cannot afford it or they will be asked to pay on a sliding scale based on income, just to help cover our expenses.
I want my hair to go to a certain person who you are campaigning for, can you make sure this person gets my hair?
We cannot promise but we will try. Be sure to put the persons name on the envelope when you send it. We put the hair together for the recipient as it is received. If we get too much we will keep it on file for another person.
Why do you ask for photos of me cutting my hair?
It helps us to build awareness for our cause.
My group or organization would like to plan a ponytail drive, how can we do this?
Awesome! Contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org
Hope these Ponytail Donation FAQ’s have answered all of your questions, please feel free to ask some more!!
